Although there are all sorts of popular roadsters available for purchase these days, one of the most-popular models happens to be the Jaguar F-Type.
A replacement for the iconic E-Type that was built in the 1960s, this car represents Jaguar’s attempt to put its mark on the high-performance sports car market once again and has certainly raised a few eyebrows at the headquarters of German sports car maker Porsche, I can tell you!
Based on a shortened version of the XK Convertible, the F-Type was launched last year (2013) by the Coventry-based car manufacturer in convertible format, and there is now a coupe version available for purchase. Although these are somewhat costly brand new, the good news is that you can buy a used Jaguar F-Type on the used car market.
So, what is it about this rear-wheel drive roadster (and coupe) that is making people want to sell their mothers to buy it?
You don’t hang around when you’re driving an F-Type
If you want to buy a sports car that offers impressive fuel economy, or one that is designed for frugal motorists, you should probably consider buying a Ford Focus coupe.
But if you want a car with an engine that provides you with seemingly limitless amounts of power, and you want to own a car made by a well-known and well-respected car manufacturer, the Jaguar F-Type is the sports car for you!
Granted that there isn’t a huge amount of engine choices on this sporty cat, the ones you can choose will most certainly knock your socks off! There are a couple of supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engines that put out 335 and 374 brake horsepower, the former being sold under the standard model and the latter being the “S”.
And for those of you that have super unleaded coursing through your veins, there is also the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 which has a whopping 488 brake horsepower! To be honest, even the standard model still has respectable specifications, achieving a 0 to 60 time of just 5.1 seconds (the V8 does this in 4.2 seconds).
Automatic, or clevermatic?
It should be noted that all F-Types come with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and there is no choice for a manual gearbox. This might dishearten some of you die-hard manual drivers, but the good news is that it’s actually a pretty intelligent gearbox!
When you mention automatic transmissions, people tend to think of those ancient gearboxes with only two or three forward gears, and a “drive” gear that seems to lurch the car forward or make a right racket whenever it shifts up a gear!
To be fair, modern cars don’t have such gearboxes anymore (thank goodness!), and many cars have what’s known as semi-automatic or “direct-shift” gearboxes, depending on whom you buy your car from.
The eight-speed automatic transmission on the Jaguar F-Type is pretty good at changing gears rather quickly, which is great news if you’re driving around in a car that has a ridiculous amount of brake horsepower under the bonnet!
