Instead of trying to trim your beard yourself, to ensure it looks as good as possible, get a barber to trim it for you. Once your barber has reshaped and trimmed your beard, you will then be able to keep on top of it more easily at home.

Sometimes a good barber can be hard to find, but they are out there. Opt for someone who is friendly, happy to discuss styling with and takes their time working on your beard.

Instead of using shaving foam, use a shaving oil instead. By using a clear shaving oil, you will be able to see what you are doing and where you are trimming, instead of doing it blind.

If you notice any problems with your beard, like ingrowing hairs, lack of growth or loss of hair, don’t ignore them. Make an appointment to see your doctor immediately to get the problem diagnosed.

If your doctor can’t help with the condition, they may refer you to a hair specialist who will be able to suggest the best course of action. For example, if you have facial hair loss problems, your doctor may refer you to a beard transplant specialist. Or, if your beard is failing to grow, you may be referred to someone who specialises in male hormone disorders.

The key to a healthy and well-groomed beard is a good quality beard trimmer. Don’t settle for an average beard trimmer, invest in a high-quality one instead. Before choosing the best trimmer for your needs, have a look at your options online and have a read of each trimmer’s reviews.

Don’t make the mistake of using scissors to trim your beard – you will end up with a messy, uneven look. Opt for a full-size trimmer – like the ones barbers use, as this will make grooming easier.

  1. Don’t forget to clean the skin

As well as cleaning your beard, don’t forget to clean and care for the skin underneath. Invest in a moisturising facial exfoliator and use it to exfoliate the skin under your beard and then apply a rich moisturiser. (Once this has soaked in, you can then wash your beard to get rid of any moisturiser residue.)
