Tuxedo: buy or rent?

When it comes to black tie events, renting a tuxedo can be a serious inconvenience. For this reason, many young men are trending toward purchasing their own. Sometimes this makes sense, and other times it isn’t the best option. The question is: how do you know which is right for you?

The answer is in your social obligations, sense of style, habits and lifestyle, and body type.

If you are going to have several events on your social calendar each season requiring upscale dress, then you may need a tuxedo, if not two. Renting a tuxedo can be quite an event, but the thought of having to go through the hassle every month is unthinkable.

Having said this, if you like to keep up with the latest fashion trends rather than wear yesterday’s style, or a more conservative one that will last, then renting is a better option because you may find that you don’t like the way you look, which can effect your confidence and whether or not you are having a good time.

On habits and lifestyle: if you travel a lot, work out all the time, or indulge in the finest foods and drinks, this is going to have a serious influence on whether you should be buying or renting. While runners and boxers who have an ideal weight for peak performance can feel comfortable knowing they are going to fit in their tuxedo from one season to the next, young executives who are on flights to different countries more than they are home, may want to consider a rental.

Lastly, genetics come into play. Some of us are built like Dagwood from the comic strip Blondie and others are more like Ziggy. For the Ziggy types, buying is feasible if you can afford a few different sizes and don’t mind keeping your look conservative, but the expense may not be worth it.

As with everything, this choice has to be weighed among several factors. Personal preference being among them.
