When I was a kid I spent a large amount of my time swimming as I used to live near the coast, and ever since then I have always taken up any opportunity to engage in some water-based activities. For example, I recently went sailing with a few friends and thoroughly enjoyed my time out at sea!
I must admit; I’m not someone that regularly goes out sailing, especially as I now live about 150 miles away from the coast, but I can see that technology can play a huge part in any sailor’s time out at sea.
If you are lucky enough to own a boat and spend much of your time sailing, you need to check out these must-have technology gadgets for people just like you!
1. Contour HD Camera
When you are trying to pull out or adjust sails, or perhaps steer your boat in choppy waters, the last thing you want to be doing is holding the camera at the same time!
One thing that many sailors do when they want to capture any cation is to wear a helmet with a Contour HD camera attached to it.
2. VHF Radio
An essential gadget for any sailor is to have a VHF radio on board their boats. These devices enable sailors to communicate with other vessels in the sea, coastguards and more. They are long-range transmission devices, and are perfect for those that want to sail the high seas.
You can also buy portable VHF radios that are similar in appearance to walkie talkies, and are useful during emergency situations where you might need to abandon your yacht and get into a dinghy or similar.
3. Apple iPad
You might not think it, but a growing number of sailors make sure they don’t leave port without taking an Apple iPad with them!
These popular tablet devices can be set up with all manner of useful maritime apps such as shipping charts, GPS navigation and more.
4. Remote Control Boat
Are you stuck in port at the moment, waiting for supplies or repairs to your boat? If so, you will probably have a lot of time on your hands before you can head out to sea again.
One fun way to pass the time is to get yourself a remote control boat in the water! These cool gadgets work in the same way as remote control cars, in that you have some controls that wirelessly communicate with the boat so that you can steer it, make it go faster or slower, and so forth.
5. Nikon D3 Digital SLR Camera
Many sailors would love to take photos of their environment as they sail around all sorts of weird and wonderful parts of the world. Unfortunately, water and electronic equipment don’t mix!
However, the good news is that you can buy some sealed “waterproof” cameras, such as the Nikon D3 digital SLR. The bad news is that it is rather expensive! Still, if you want to take decent quality photographs when you’re out at sea, it’s best to have the right tools for the job.
